Reading is Fundamental

October, 25 2015

As a Certified Public Accountant, who happens to own a bookkeeping firm, I consider myself an expert in numbers. I love working with numbers and yes, nerdy as it sounds, I love reading about them too.

Reading is FundamentalThis month, in honor of National Book Month, I want to share with you my favorite reads. Some of these books are new and on my to read list; others are good reads for business owners or anyone who wants to have a better understanding of money matters. Here are just three of my favorites:

  • Your New Money Mindset: Create a Relationship with Money is a great new read by Brad Hewitt, CEO of Thrivent Financial, and psychologist James Moline. This book makes us think about the part money plays in our lives. It helps us to examine our attitude toward money leading to financial freedom and a healthy relationship with the almighty dollar.
  •  Small Business Accounting by David Lloyd and Andy Lymer. So I’m an accountant, who happens to run a bookkeeping firm, whose favorite reads include accounting books. This book by David Lloyd and Andy Lymer shares real-life examples and step-by-step instructions on how to record transactions and prepare a budget. It also provides tips to run your small business. Okay, so this is what we do at Brigade Bookkeeping, but we feel in order to run a successful company, business owners should know the basics. This 224-page book offers advice and lots of real-life case studies. Of course, Brigade Bookkeeping does that too, so anytime you want to talk accounting or bookkeeping, e-mail or give us a call.
  • Go Set a Watchman: A Novel by Harper Lee. I love when I find something I thought I had lost forever. I guess that’s why this novel, by To Kill a Mockingbird author, Harper Lee, is on my to read list. There’s been so much hype about Go Set a Watchman. Harper Lee originally submitted it to her publishers in the mid-1950’s, but it wasn’t discovered until last year. I loved To Kill a Mockingbird and I can’t wait to see how some of the characters turn out 20 years later, which is the time period this novel is set in.

“A book is a device to ignite the imagination,” said author, Alan Bennett. I agree. As a diligent business owner, a mom and wife, sometimes reading is the last thing I have time for, but reading is fundamental. As one of my very favorite authors, Dr. Seuss, once said, “The more you read the more things you know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.”

So take some time out for yourself and your business by setting aside some time to read this week.
