Save Money While Preparing for Hurricane Season

June, 3 2018

We saw our very first named storm of 2018 this past week. So glad Alberto has come and gone! If you didn’t prepare for that storm, you’re not too late. I hate to talk about disasters two weeks in a row, but preparing for them is important, and this week, you can save money while preparing for hurricane season.

Today (actually it started June 1), through June 7th, Florida is waiving the sales tax on many items you might need during a hurricane. Florida lawmakers wanted to give Floridians a break on the cost of important items. Last year’s busy hurricane season resulted in $25 billion to $65 billion in losses from Hurricane Irma alone.

There are a number of items you can buy tax free during Florida’s Tax exempt hurricane holiday. Here are some tax exempt hurricane items:

  • PORTABLE GENERATORS – Under $750
  • FLASHLIGHTS – Under $20
  • RADIOS – Under $50
  • WATERPROOF SHEETING – Under $50
  • GROUND ANCHOR SYSTEM – Under $50
  • GAS TANK – Under $25
  • BATTERIES – Under $30
  • COOLERS – Under $30
  • REUSABLE ICE – Under $10

You’re going to have to prepare for hurricane season, so why not get a little tax relief while buying your much-needed supplies. If you have any questions, talk to your bookkeeper or accountant. If they don’t know anything about this tax savings, give us a call or shoot us an email and we’ll walk you through the important items you’ll need to do or buy before a storm hits.
